Happy New Year to you, 2015 has officially arrived. I found myself ringing in the New Year with dear friends in the freezing tundra of southern California and San Diego. I think it was colder here then back East. Over the years this trip has become a tradition, finding my way to southern California for the New Year after having spent the Christmas holidays with family in Phoenix. The tradition started in 2000 when I came west to celebrate my retirement from NASA and the end of the world with the New Millennium taking place.

I spent the majority of my time with friends on Coronado Island watching football and doing all we could to ring in the New Year. I must say I was extremely disappointed in the result of most of the football games, especially with Alabama losing to Ohio State but I did not allow that to dampen my spirit for welcoming 2015. With the beauty of the holiday in full bloom, we were able to take in the sights of the island including the majestic Hotel Del. Part of our adventures included a private historical tour of the hotel which proved to be absolutely fascinating. One of the most awe-inspiring areas was the Crown Room where dinners and meetings have been held of majestic proportions. The room is captivating with its wood ceiling and its three “crown” chandeliers. One could only imagine the tales that have been told there.

The Del opened it doors in 1888 and became a popular get away. By the 1920’s the hotel had become a playground for the rich, the beautiful and the famous. There possibly is no greater treasure on the west coast then the “HOTEL DEL” and no greater establishment that maintains so many secrets.

It is always a pleasure to visit the island at this time of the year with its vast array of decorations and the Hotel Del pulls out all the stops. The holiday bling is fitting of an establishment with this character and storied history. I was fortunate enough to steal away to spend some time capturing the holiday beauty of this historic lady! ENJOY!!!!
