One Last Look

Happy Post Thanksgiving. I hope you were able to share your holiday time with family and friends and you are getting over the Turkey Blues. Congratulations to the Crimson Tide for their incredible win in the Iron Bowl! It is now on to the SEC Championship game against the Georgia Bulldogs!!

It is an autumn that keeps on giving. Just when you think there is no more color to capture you turn another bend and it is like spinning the wheel of a kaleidoscope. I had not been up to Little River Canyon in some time and hoping that they may be some glimmer of autumn color, I decided to take a day and head up there. Driving up to Mentone and Little River Canyon National Preserve is one my favorite day drives and it never disappoints. Like I said before I am generally on the road during the autumn spectacle of colors and with it being later this year I’ve been very fortunate.

One of the most picturesque drives is the eleven-mile scenic drive located on the western side of the canyon along AL Highway 176 (off AL Highway 35) known as Canyon Road. The trip offers numerous overlooks that are very accessible and a prefect view of the canyon starting with the Little River Falls Boardwalk. Two of my favorite stopping points are Lynn Overlook and Canyon View Overlook. Both of which offer a spectacular view of the canyon. As the fall colors were lingering for one last glimpse, it was even more amazing.

If you have the opportunity, you need to visit the area. Little River Canyon National Preserve is just a short drive from Huntsville and offers many majestic views that include DeSoto State Park, DeSoto Falls, Mushroom Rock and Little River Falls. While you are in the area stop in at the Mentone Arts and Cultural Center located in “Downtown Mentone”, grab a cup of coffee and have some lunch, tour the art gallery and say Hello to Ray and Sandra Padgett. It will be a very memorable trip well worth the drive!
