Oh Danny Boy

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I hope you all had a great weekend and now face the week ahead of you with a refreshed outlook.  After spending 5 days in Michigan City I find myself once again in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

I stepped off the plane in Norfolk, Va. with a little bit of anxiety knowing that hurricane season had begun. Hurricane Bill was the first to leave his mark the previous week and Hurricane Danny was due to visit the Outer Banks last weekend.  As much as I felt a little wee bit anxious about heading to the Outer Banks, on the other hand I did so with quite a bit of exhilaration. Having grown up surfing the east coast of Florida, I was quite familiar with the effects a Hurricane can have on the quality of surf and North Carolina is known for its surfing.

Luckily Danny stayed off shore and got no larger than a Category 1, which was a welcome relief for the tourists and residents of OBX. More importantly though, it was extremely welcomed by the surf community. Surfers from up and down the east coast flocked to the “S Curves” in Rodanthe, NC to take advantage of Hurricane Danny’s gift of pure perfect waves.

For a moment it took me back to my early days when I was doing the do – Hanging Ten – surfing in Cocoa Beach. But for today I find myself instead, photographing the pageantry and spectacle of the sport. From past to present, one thing still remains constant …..  it is …. the best show in town.

I am also pleased to announce that my OBX art is now being sold exclusively at the Roads End Gallery in Hatteras and the Down Creek Gallery in Ocracoke.

Music City

Monday, August 24th, 2009

It has been such a pleasure to have been home for the last few weeks and have the opportunity to spend time with clients and friends. I now find myself at the beginning of another commercial journey and I am looking forward to being out on the road again. “Just can’t get enough of those suga crisps”

As I began my journey, I found myself in Nashville awaiting an early morning departure. The first part of the evening was spent with friends consuming my favorite food …. Sushi!!  And those that know me, know how much I love sushi. As I headed back to the hotel, the bright lights of Nashville beamed ever so brightly as the moon rose over the city. The beauty of the “Batman Tower”  reflecting in the river beckoned as if Sirens were calling. The attached image is one of the splendid views of the town they affectionately call – Music City.

Balance with Mother Nature

Monday, August 17th, 2009

How fickle Mother Nature can be. Last week was almost fall like and this week, blazing heat and humidity. They say …. if you are not happy with the weather in Alabama,  just stick around … it is always changing.

Speaking of Mother Nature, after finishing a shoot in Decatur, Al I took the opportunity to stop by a friend’s house to do a little catching up. While sitting on her back deck, which is directly on the Tennessee River, we watched in awe as one of those typical summer thunderstorms approached from the west. With its dark and billowy clouds, it moved ever so threatening towards us. The forceful and continual changing cloud formations were daunting but luckily for us, the storm stayed to the north of the river. Every so often we would hear the thunder and see a lightning burst, I think just so “she” could remind us of  “her” dangerous powers. As the storm past by and the sun broke through for one last glimpse, I thought just how fickle Mother Nature really can be but how wonderful the reward.

As we sat and watched the golden glow to the west, a beautiful collaboration between man and Mother Nature occurred, providing a very spectacular curtain call for the day.  Steam from the reactors at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant rose into the sky as if to say … “We can have balance and We can compliment each other.” The plant is the very first one built and maintained by the Tennessee Valley Authority (www.tva.gov) and is named after a ferry that once operated at the site.

How majestic the view … how wonderful to have balance in life.
Enjoy!!!!!!!

Horse Sense

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Another great week in the neighborhood and what a wonderful week it was. Am I really in the south and is it really the first week of August?  Wasn’t the weather just spectacular?

With a free day on the ticket last week and my wonderful girlfriend in town, visiting from the Outer Banks, I decided to take her own a tour of the Alabama countryside and visit some friends. We traveled over to Guntersville, past the State Park on to Bucks Pocket and then took some back roads around Geraldine. As we were driving, we can across a freshly plowed field of hay. What an incredible sight with the sun slowing setting in the west, the puffy clouds in the sky and the beautiful field full of hundreds of hay bales. And what would a view like this be without a few horses to round out the picture? It sealed the deal. We decided to stop and take in the view.

You know stopping and taking it all in, just made perfect …. Horse Sense!!! I guess that is why we call it … Alabama the Beautiful!!!
Enjoy!!!

Beauty of Research

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

I am back in Huntsville and enjoying all the beauty the city has to offer. With a great week of shooting last week, I am looking forward to what August has to offer.

No matter where I travel the one question that gets asked the most is, “where are you from?”  When I tell them Huntsville, Alabama … I generally get “You’re from Allll-aaaaa-bammmm-a?” For those of us who reside here you know exactly how that sounds.  I then feel completely compelled “to attempt” to dispel all of the many southern myths they have about the city and state. I use to do that by giving them the facts on Huntsville …… 2nd largest research park in the U.S., 4th in the world, highest per capita of PhD’s in the south and so on and so on. But with today’s technologically gifted world there is no need for words, I just pull out my IPhone and show them a gallery of photographs of the wonderful beauty and technology the city and the area has to offer.

Once they have seen a few images like the one below of the Adtran campus in Cummings Research Park, nothing more is needed. Enjoy!!
